For those keeping track, no, I didn't forget about chapter 3, there just wasn't anything that jumped out to me to post, but chapter 4 had plenty and it was really hard to pare it down. Again, I can't endorse this book enough! I really don't like to read books that take the long way around getting to the point. This book is straight and to the point, so much so it is sometimes like getting smacked up side the head with the reality of your own sinfulness and the unending grace bestowed on us daily from the Lord. Oh, and the chapters are short too, which is great when you get interrupted a lot like I do. Here are my favorite quotes from chapter 4, drumroll please......
"In Mark 10 we find Jesus and His disciples on the road, going up to Jerusalem. This is the last journey of Jesus' ministry, and the final destination is in full view. The hour for which He ultimately came now approaches. The cross is on the horizon. This long journey to Jerusalem and the cross will apparently be a lonely one for the Savior, for He's making it without the full understanding and support of his disciples. They continue to be blinded by selfish ambition, so He must continue to teach and instruct them and confront their arrogance. And yet, however grieved His heart must surely be at this moment, we see Him walking ahead of them. No one is prodding Him on; no one is forcing Him. He's leading the way. And the One leading the way is the only One in this group of travelers who's aware of what indescribable anguish awaits Him there. Pause, if you will, and picture Him in your mind. Behold this lone figure out in front, fully aware and informed of what awaits Him in Jerusalem. See Him steadfast in heart, determined, setting the pace for His disciples, striding purposefully forward.
Where?
To Jerusalem.
Why?
To die."
(page 48-49)
"Why was the death of Jesus necessary? Because all of humanity is corrupt and condemned, and we all have an acute tendency to deny the reality of our lost state before God." (page 52)
"Consider your own life for just a moment. Where would you be today if He hadn't ransomed you, if He hadn't liberated you? I'll tell you where. You would be self-sufficient, seeking to cultivate self-confidence for the purpose of self-glorification." (page 58)
"The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
